Annotation

Davidson, Gerald. "Women and Warriors of the Plains." The Magazine of Western
History 1999. 29 Apr. 2008 mi_qa3951/is_199904/ai_n8847809>. The authors of this article based it
on a women named Tuell, who was the wife of a schoolteacher and lived amont
the Cheyennes on their reservation in Montana. She later lived among the
Sioux. This article is based off pictures and descriptions of life mostly
in the 1940's when the Indian tribes were around. The pictures reveal
poverty and stress. The Sioux women were left with leisure time after being
confined to their reservations. Later on the women would take their time to
create clothing and deal with other personal issues, for they had their own
"leisure" time. The author gave me enough information to get a
understand of the Sioux Women; however, the author strongly disagrees. He
argues that the author does not give more insight and explanation of the
Indian women.

Manliness

Manliness is a big theme that is shown through out Macbeth. The thought of owning up to be a man is always used. It is taken to the next level and replaces care for one another. In the book, sometimes being a man and living up to high expectations is the way to be honored. For example, when Siward’s son died he wondered if the wound was on his front or backside. If the wound was on his backside, it would mean that he was running away from battle, for if it was on his front then he faced the enemy. When Ross tells Siward that the wound was on his front, then Siward is pleased. You can tell that Siward’s son has now earned his fathers respect because he states, “Why then, God's soldier be he! Had I as many sons as I have hairs, I would not wish them to a fairer death. And so, his knell is knolled.” In modern text Siward is saying that if he had any more sons he couldn’t even hope that any of them would die more honorably than his son did. In conclusion this proves that the theme of manliness and honor is used through out the book as a sense of pride and respect.

blog post 4

When someone feels guilty it will haunt him or her forever. Although whatever happened cannot be taken back, the guilt will still always remain. On One Tree Hill, one of the main characters Dan Scott, kills his very own brother. In the moment, Dan felt it was the right thing to do; however, one second later Dan is speechless. He then walked with a blank look on his face. As the days passed, the guilt rose so bad that Dan would hallucinate images of his little brother running around whispering, “danny boy, danny, danny….you killed me.” There came a point when Dan had nightmares and pictured the words murderer and you killed me all over. After being so caught up, Dan just wanted to be put away, for when his son punched another guy out and practically killed him, Dan took the blame. Then again Dan still seemed like a hero for taking a blame, but deep down this guilt was haunting and taunting with his mind. Guilt is usually followed up lie after lie, after lie. Guilt doesn’t just happen in TV shows for people live with guilt every day.
Mothers also always tend to feel guilty, for you don't always have to commit a crime to experience this feeling. In fact, I know what its like to feel guilty. I don’t remember what I did; however, I do remember how I felt. It wasn't easy to deal with, for i didn't even do anything bad. I recall not being able to concentrate for the next couple of days until the problem was resolved. Though there times where guilt can teach you a lesson and have a positive effect on you, such as, knowing what makes you feel guilty. The more guilt a person contains, the worse the effects are. Just like in MacBeth, Lady MacBeth starts to sleep walk. The doctors see her frequently rubbing her hands, while she is saying out loud for spots to come off. This refers to the guilt she feels about convincing her husband to kill Duncan and Banquo. The doctor and the gentlewoman had watched her sleep for a few days. Not only is this haunting Lady MacBeth, but the doctors and gentlewoman now had an idea in their mind bout the murder. This feeling wont leave Lady MacBeth any time soon, until her death and is now the reason for her and her husbands secret to be revealed.

Socratic Seminar #2

• The way the story is written confuses some people because they are trying to understand the story, but while doing that they have to try and understand the words and get used to the language.
• Others feels the story is suspenseful and goes a fast pace so it does not get boring
• Lady macbeth helps the idea of feminism because she is strong and powerful, but killing someone has nothing to do with it.
• Additional question: if lady macbeth manipulates her husband to kill someone who has a family, and feminism revolves around helping single woman, then is she really a role model for feminism?
• She knows how to play the system and manipulate her husband into doing bad things.
• Today she does not help the idea of feminism, but in Shakespeare’s time she would be seen has someone very independent and powerful.
• I agree that the book can get confusing and I also agree that Lady MacBeth could be a role model for the reasons of being powerful and independent, but for manipulating someone to murder another person, is not a right role model. She takes feminism to an extreme.
• I agree that Paris Hilton does not take the initiative to gain respect for her self. She isn’t known as much of person, rather than just a Barbie doll.
• I disagree that she could be a role model for some because she is always shown in a negative way. Even though she donates money, she could care less she just wants a better social status.
• Miley Cyrus is because everyone loves her and she has not done anything bad yet.
• I agree that a good role model is a mom because she does things for you and is always there for you. I agree that Oprah maybe be a role model but she has too much power because she can use her show to bash people.
• I feel oprah gives money so she keeps up her status, even though she doesn’t really care as much.
• I think that if a person does good things for a wrong reason, but no one actually knows then no, the person is not a good role model, but people can look up to the things the role model does, but not the reasons why they do it.
• Using sexuality to try and get ahead is not a skill that should be used because it never results to good things. It just causes problems.
• Hillary Clinton can be good role model for being the first woman president, but men may not vote for her.
• Men today wouldn’t be able to have control if their manliness was challenged.
• Knowing your future would be the biggest mistake of your life. Knowing it would just mess with your head and take over. Wrong decisions would be made, for you will want to get to one point in your future and you may screw it up. It could also prevent you from doing and trying new things that may be able to change your life.
• Would the predicated future be your future because it was predicted or was it your actual future before you knew it?
• If macbeth never took initiative would he still become king? I think so, but he just rushed into it because the witches are now just enjoying it.
• Macbeth is not a tragic figure, for he is not corrupted everything he mad the choice to do and Banquo is close to being corrupted.
• Overall negative attention is better than no attention at all.

FEMALES FIGHT FOR FEMINISM

Is there a specific reason to why women are treated differently than men are? Feminism in the belief of the movement to political, social, and economic equality for women. I feel that feminism today revolves around about five main topics: rape, abortion, child care/family leave, poverty, and equal pay. Overall women will never fully have respect and that is one of the main problems. No matter what a woman does in a work force she will be harassed about it and if she does something else it will just be mocked and criticized. Although some will argue that feminism is just a movement towards the hatred of men, it is not, for it is the movement for women to gain the respect they deserve.
The example of men trying to use their power towards women in a negative way is shown through rape. In this article, it states that men argue that rape is not a sex crime, but a crime of violence and power. This, however, is not correct. Rape can change a women’s life, for most women who are raped suffer through mental social and mental change. Rape also brings up another controversial issue towards women,
abortion.
Feminism groups today focus on the right to an abortion. They feel it is important for a female to have the right to do as they please with their own baby, especially if the pregnancy is caused by rape. These “feminists groups” also believe that a woman should have rights to childcare thats affordable. This also leads up to the idea that businesses should provide flexible hours for a woman with a child. The poverty issues deals with welfare and the issue that single mothers usually have money problems. It is statistically proven that a woman is more likely to raise a child alone, rather than men. Feminists groups also have faith in this movement to help women obtain equal pay in the work force, for most business' don’t put women in high authority positions. Feminism today is definitely revolved around the every day/monthly issues a woman has to deal with, including personal problems.
How do you know that what is not appropriate is actually appropriate and what is appropriate is not actually inappropriate? You don’t. All you know is what you hear around the world today, and what the economy is based on. Going with the economy and the idea that doing drugs and having sex at a young age is inappropriate, then there is a huge amount of inappropriate role models being exposed to the public.
       Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and
Jamie-Lynn Spears are perfect examples of inappropriate role models. First of all Lindsay Lohan has been to rehab multiple times, Jamie-Lynn Spears is already pregnant and only 16, and Paris Hilton has set an example to cause many high school girls to act and dress a certain way. Vanessa Hudges also was caught with naked pictures of herself. Considering that she was a Disney chanel star, it isn’t very appropriate at all. All this might not be such a horrible thing if it didn’t lead to some of the angles of feminism previously listed. These role models, who are cherished through out the teenage world are in fact corrupting the teenage mind.
Although there are inappropriate role models in the world, there are a few appropriate ones. One of them is Disney Chanel’s favorite, Miley Cyrus. She has set a role model for young kids. Her motto remains to stay pure until marriage and Miley is one of the first stars to not get sucked into the pressure of drinking and doing drugs. Even though she is famous she hasn’t taken advantage of it to do inappropriate things. Hillary Clinton can also be an acceptable role model because she has stuck with her main ideas and is now the
first woman to run for president. This attitude is necessary in a role model, to be able to put your mind to something and do it, no matter what the outcome will be or what people will say. I think that in Shakespeare’s time, Lady Macbeth would have been considered an appropriate role model in some ways.
Lady Macbeth was a good role model because she was powerful, but the bad thing was that she was manipulative. She manipulated MacBeth to kill Duncan and for that she is a not a suitable candidate for a role model. She is always the head behind the evil plans and event though she claims its for the best that her husband commits these crimes, she wouldn’t do it her self. In conclusion she is not an acceptable leader for feminism. Lady Macbeth convinces her husband to kill a man, who may very well have had a wife. If that is so, his wife is now left a single woman and facing the problems that women would.

POWER TAKES OVER PEOPLES PERSONALITIES

People who are considered to be “good” sometimes make a few wrong decisions, which can even be considered a crime. For example, x governor of New York, Elliot Spitzer was involved in something illegal. Elliot Spitzer who does have a wife was found secretly transporting prostitutes from state to state to meet him places. Just before this was revealed, Mr. Spitzer was considered a great and loyal guy.
Although, Mr. Spitzer was respected in the past, this one crime has turned almost everyone’s feelings about him around. This x governor is no longer respected; he is considered a hypocrite. Spizter, however; does feel remorse for what he has done, for in his speech to resign, he says, “I apologize to the public to whom I promised better.” This shows how one little boost in the place of power can really ruin a life and/or tempt people to commit crimes, thinking they can get away with it. I don’t think Spitzer had a reason for this action, but being lost in power is no justifiable reason to hire a prostitute. Just like Spizter, Macbeth also went against what he believed in.
Although Macbeth isn’t based about a time of government, this power still took over him. It’s not that he had enough power to kill Duncan, for he didn’t even want to, it is just the power that reeled him in to do so. In Macbeth’s case, power was what he wanted, but Lady Macbeth was the one who influenced him to do so. Greed is what created the change in Macbeth. After already being Thane of Cawdor, he just wanted more, for he didn’t even have the patience to wait, therefore; going against his own morals and killing King Duncan. For this reason is not in any way justifiable. In conclusion power was a factor in both men’s crimes, but in today’s society different kinds of power are good.
