Memorial day weeekend

5/28/08

Over the memorial weekend break I did many things.
On Thursday…
- I came home after to school to drop off my stuff and then I went to Emily’s house.
- After Emily’s house I went home, for I was bored because we didn’t do anything.
- On Friday I sat home waiting for my brother, Josh to come home from college.
- My brother Josh, who looked very tired, didn’t even talk to me while he was home.
- Friday night my whole family went out for dinner.
- Saturday morning I met up with Emily and her dad for breakfast and then we went back to Emily’s house.
- Later that night my mom wanted me to have dinner with the family so she picked me up and drove me to my aunts house.
- At 9:30 she drove me back to Emily’s and I slept there.
- Sunday I stayed at Emily’s house for her barbeque and then went out with her.
- Sunday night Emily came back to me house and stayed over.
- In the morning, Emily left but I came back to her house 2 hours later when my mom went to go see her mom.
- We walked into town and then went back to my other friend’s house.
- I then got driven back to my house to go to sleep.
- On Sunday I went out with my cousin and went swimming.
- This break was really fun and I wish to have as much fun next year.

Outline

Final Assessment/ Research Paper Outline
Use this outline to prepare your thoughts and ideas for your paper. Once you finish, cut and paste it over to your blog. This paper will be between 3-5 pages, so make sure you have enough to discuss. There are spaces for 4 body paragraphs; if you don’t need that many, then ignore them.

What is the question you are answering in your own words?
If you could take out any book in the school and replace it for another one, which would you take out and why? Write the essay by comparing the importance of reading one book over the other.

What is your thesis statement? This sets up the entire paper with your focus and direction. Tuesdays with Morrie should be put in Pascack Hills High School’s curriculum in place of The House on Mango Street, for its themes are in closer relation to everyday situations and its impact can lead to becoming an emotionally stronger person whereas The House on Mango Street is misleading and does not positively influence students.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
Old age

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. "The good news is that with age comes happiness," said study author Yang Yang, a University of Chicago sociologist.

b.

What example(s) from the book(s) will you use to help prove your points?
a. Morrie talks about how being old isn’t something to be ashamed of because you have already been through all the other ages so you don’t have to be depressed.

b.

BODY PARAGRAPH 2
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
forgiveness

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. But forgiveness "isn't just removing the bad stuff. It's moving beyond that to adding the positive."

b.

What example(s) from the book(s) will you use to help prove your points?
a. Morrie talks about forgiveness and how you cant move on without it.

b.Morrie also says that once someone dies who is not forgiven, the one who didn’t forgive feels badly and has to live with the horrible feeling.

BODY PARAGRAPH 3
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
greed

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. “In other words, it is alright to retire from work but do not retire from society. If someone is physically and mentally able to contribute, do so.”

b. “This is why some people, such as Bill Gates, his wife (Melinda Gates), and Warren Buffet are donating most of their huge fortunes to charity. They understand the virtue of generosity, instead of succumbing to greed.”

What example(s) from the book(s) will you use to help prove your points?
a. Morrie talks about how money isn’t the solution to happiness. You have to do what you really love

b. The house on mango street sets a bad example because the main characters are poor and hate their lifestyle.

CONCLUSION
What should we now understand after reading your paper? Where idea(s) does your paper lead to?
a. Tuesdays with Morrie is a much more appropriate book to read for students, rather than reading The house on Mango street because the themes are useful.

b. The house on mangro street does not have an impact on the reader, unlike Tuesdays with morrie, where every reader is intrigued by the book.

Cornell Notes 5/15

Cornell Notes for Sources

TITLE: Study: Old Age Is the Happiest Time
AUTHOR: Lindsay Tanner
YEAR PUBLISHED: 2008

Main Idea #1: Getting older shouldn’t be depressing

Summary: This article describes being old as nothing to feel scared or worried about. It is just more years in your life to look forward too, not dwell on the past.

Quote: "The good news is that with age comes happiness," said study author Yang Yang, a University of Chicago sociologist.

Question:

Main Idea #2: Nothing is perfect and you have to accept what you have.

Summary: This article also discusses how living with what you have can just make things easier. A woman talks about how even though she has vision problems and these aren’t the happiest years of her life exactly, she still is content. She learns to deal and appreciate what she has left.

Quote: "Contentment as far as I'm concerned comes with old age ... because you accept things the way they are," she said. "You know that nothing is perfect." (siger)

Question:

Main Idea #3:

Summary:

Quote:

Question:

How will this source help you write your paper?
This source will help me write my paper because Morrie also feels that being old isn’t something to be sad about. I will be able to use this article to give back up information that this them in the book is related to a everyday feeling for elders. The article talks about how being old is the best; because you have more knowledge and so does Morrie. Having this information in my paper will help me show the difference of how Tuesdays with morrie would be more meaningful to read than The House on Mango Street.

TITLE: Forgiveness could be balm for the body, too; The shackles of the past can harm your health, experts warn.
AUTHOR: Karen S. Peterson
YEAR PUBLISHED: 2003

Main Idea #1: Forgiveness

Summary: Forgiving someone is a lesson to be taught to everyone. Everybody needs to understand how important it is to forgive someone and that holding a grudge, will just cause more problems.

Quote: But forgiveness "isn't just removing the bad stuff. It's moving beyond that to adding the positive."

Question:

Main Idea #2: Improving life with forgiveness.

Summary: Forgiveness is so important that it can change your life. When you hold a grudge it will just cause more stress and you will be come bitter. Forgiving someone can just improve the social skills.

Quote: “The ability to forgive just might improve your marriage, your health and your outlook on life.”

Question:

Main Idea #3:

Summary:

Quote:

Question:

How will this source help you write your paper? This source will help me write my paper because one of the main themes in Tuesdays with Morrie is about forgiveness. The House on Mango Street never even talks about forgiveness. This site states that forgiveness is proven to help improve your life. This will help me write my paper because I am going to have to argue that we need a book in the curriculum that has an impact on us and has themes we can relate to.

TITLE: Greed is Good and Bad
AUTHOR: Phil B
YEAR PUBLISHED:

Main Idea #1: greed is good

Summary: Greed might be good because it can help you be more motivated.

Quote: “greed is good, because it is the most important incentive for people to work hard, get a good education, start a business, or invest in a company. This makes people productive and contributing members of society.”

Question: Aren’t there other ways to achieve these goal rather than being too greedy?

Main Idea #2: Greed is bad

Summary: Greed is bad because it causes a lot of problems. Not only does it cause problems in business, but also it does with people and your self. Greed can ruin someone’s life. Money can’t always make you happy.

Quote: “In other words, it is alright to retire from work but do not retire from society. If someone is physically and mentally able to contribute, do so.”

Question:

Main Idea #3: Collection money afterwards.

Summary: If you are going to be one of ht epoeple that still collect moenya nd work when they don’t need it atleast don’t keep it all. Do something nice with it like donate to charity.

Quote: “This is why some people, such as Bill Gates, his wife (Melinda Gates), and Warren Buffet are donating most of their huge fortunes to charity. They understand the virtue of generosity, instead of succumbing to greed.”

Question:

How will this source help you write your paper? This source will help me write my paper because between the two books, The House on Mango Street and Tuesdays with Morrie, Tuesdays with Morrie has more themes to offer. The House on Mango Street demonstrates a young girl who is unhappy with her life because she has no money, but in Tuesdays with Morrie and this article, they both talk about how money can’t always make you happy and to be happy you should do things for others. This will help argue my point that Tuesdays with Morrie needs to be replaced for The House on Mango Street.

Socratic Seminar 2

Socratic Seminar 2
5/12/08

The ending of the story was different. Committing suicide added a twist to the plot, because no one could of saw it coming.

The book didn’t allow you to think for your self about how the characters felt, instead they just told you.

They all agree that it is good to have a book that makes you think a little bit more rather tan just have all the information thrown at you.

How does this story compare to other books?
- the suicide part can relate to the catcher in the rye
- it seems like Macbeth and montana both have the same foreshadowing, in the beginning there is hero and then he dies.
- In the catcher in the rye, Holden never thought he was good enough and in Montana David was treated like he was a little kid and didn’t know enough to understand what drama was occurring.
- Animal Farm with the donkey, the dad is like him because he just sits back and when he tries to help it is too late for change.
- Was them leaving a good choice? – it was the right choice overall because in tie they move on and even though they shouldn’t forget about the past, it shouldn’t have to haunt them.
- Wes was put down and then because of the shame he delt with he committed suicide.
- Can you related David teaching history to a pint?
- - as time moves on people aren’t as discriminated against and he wants to share stories and teach the children about the past.
IS HE STUCK IN HIS PAST OR ABLE TO MOVE ON IN HIS LIFE?
Yes david and his dad will progress because they have to move on, but Nicole makes a good point when she says that since David didn’t have anyone open up to him in his life, being a history teacher can help him with that.

Robert says that anxiety can actually help you get throught higns. I think it would be good to use this article because, Morrie was going through a lot of anxiety loosing feeling through out his body one step at a time.

Sibling Rivalry

4/30
Sibling rivalry is always prevalent and could only be stopped by failure. In the book, Wes and his brother, Frank, who is the uncle of David, is in competition. The book states, “…and when comparisons were made between those two, my father was bound to suffer. And my father was, in many respects, an impressive man.” The literature says that even though Wes was all this, his brother was all that and more. Overall, it was almost like Wes was jealous of his brother, for he doesn’t want to believe that he is a good doctor and puts him down. Little does he know, that putting his own brother down, doesn’t make him the better person. Through out the book, this theme will always be present and in effect. This theme of sibling rivalry is just caused by the praising of one child over another.
Rivalry that occurs between siblings needs to be prevented, for the only way to do this is to seek advice or help. One tactic to help sibling rivalry is to use it for a motif to do better; however, parents can also help build up a child’s self-confidence. “Just remember that mom and Dad love both of you, meaning that they will try to resolve the dispute evenly,” says a recent article on how to stop this bickering. (Henry, 14.) In Montana, the parents’ in fact, do not realize what is going on and still praises one or the other more. For example, the father of the two-rivaled siblings gets up on a table and announces that his son is a hero, a soldier, and an extravagant person. This causes the other brother, Wes, to feel unappreciated and wants more and more to take over his brother’s position in everyone’s mind. This causes one to feel depressed and in the long run can lead to confidence issues.
The difference between an essay and research paragraph is the analysis and relations. In my first paragraph, I use examples from the book and compare them to the topic of the essay. My analysis explains the quotes/ideas and how they demonstrate or can link back to the main subject of the essay; however, in a research essay it is different. My research essay is different because I talk about sibling rivalry in the world. Research paragraphs usually require you to go into more detail about the main idea and then give a real life example. These examples can then are related back to the book or inform you with excess information about the main topic, which would be sibling rivalry. In conclusion both paragraphs are as strong, but I research essay usually requires more proof and understanding of the thesis.

Annotation

Davidson, Gerald. "Women and Warriors of the Plains." The Magazine of Western
History 1999. 29 Apr. 2008 mi_qa3951/is_199904/ai_n8847809>. The authors of this article based it
on a women named Tuell, who was the wife of a schoolteacher and lived amont
the Cheyennes on their reservation in Montana. She later lived among the
Sioux. This article is based off pictures and descriptions of life mostly
in the 1940's when the Indian tribes were around. The pictures reveal
poverty and stress. The Sioux women were left with leisure time after being
confined to their reservations. Later on the women would take their time to
create clothing and deal with other personal issues, for they had their own
"leisure" time. The author gave me enough information to get a
understand of the Sioux Women; however, the author strongly disagrees. He
argues that the author does not give more insight and explanation of the
Indian women.
